MINERVA QLD: REFLECT & RESET

Image:

Minerva QLD Chapter Lead, Dr. Sarah Kelly OAM and our generous mentor Sarah Bryden @ Holding Redlich hosted our 'Reflect and Reset’ event in the heart of Brisbane CBD on 3 December: International Day of People with a Disability.

50 Minerva QLD athletes, mentors, and leaders in sport and business enjoyed breakfast with a panel comprising two newly appointed CEO’s: Minerva mentor Eugenie Buckley, CEO at Swimming Australia, and Catherine Clark, CEO at Paralympics Australia - commencing January 2022. MC’d by Paralympian and Minerva QLD Operations Executive, Monique Murphy, the panel discussed their sporting highlights of 2021 and how they will tackle the challenge of a new role in a new organisation, resetting for 2022.

Acknowledging International Day of People with a Disability, Eugenie and Catherine shared their hopes for the para sport community in 2022 with the upcoming Winter Paralympics (4-13 March, Beijing) and Commonwealth Games (28 July-8 August, Birmingham). Catherine concluded in presenting the ‘We the 15’ video, sports' biggest ever human rights movement to end discrimination and transform the lives of the 1.2billion people living with a disability.

Dr. Sarah Kelly OAM reflected on the event, "The Minerva QLD network is all about inclusion and respect and so it was wonderful to gather to celebrate this important day on our national calendar, with such a fantastic panel discussion. Language matters in building inclusion, so one immediate action is for us all to resolve to refer to the 2032 Olympics and Paralympics at every mention."

With new athletes in attendance, Minerva welcomes QLD athletes into the network including 2xParalympic medallist Isis Holt saying, "Minerva feels like a passionate and strong environment. It is clear their number one priority is to nurture women in sport and life."

The event wrapped with the announcement that Minerva t-shirts for athletes and mentors will shortly be available. The t-shirts feature the Minerva wings logo on the back, symbolic of each wearer 'spreading their wings to soar'. This initiative will be part-funded by the Minerva QLD Christmas Raffle, including prizes from The Brisbane Lions, Minerva’s own Melissa Wu ‘Havock Athletica’, Rollie Nation Shoes and many more.

Following a successful 2021 and looking forward to 2022, our Minerva QLD network celebrated and connected with a commitment to further expand our reach and impact, enabling our sportswomen to thrive and fulfil their potential as leaders and role models.

Special thanks to Sarah Bryden, Holding Redlich, Eugenie Buckley, Catherine Clarke, Glenn Jackson and Monique Murphy.
