Gronya Somerville

Born and raised in Melbourne, Gronya has always been a proud Australian. At a young age Gronya learned her late father was a descendant of the famous Chinese Revolutionist, Kang You Wei; Gronya also takes extreme pride in her Chinese heritage. Growing up, Gronya realised she was extremely competitive and highly motivated. Falling in love with sport, she has always dreamed of representing Australia at the Olympics. Now a successful badminton player she is closer than ever to realising her dream. Gronya currently balances her badminton career with a Bachelor of Exercise Science degree at Victoria University and Chinese Mandarin lessons through an online school. Alongside her partner, Setyana Mapasa, Gronya has redefined Australian badminton. In 2016, the duo made history becoming the first Australian pair to win a Grand Prix title – winning both the Canada Open & Dutch Open in the same year. The pair have continued to produce historic results and have their sights set on 2020 Olympics. Recent achievements include 4th place at the Commonwealth Games 2018, Oceania Women’s Double Champion 2014 – 2019 and Oceania Mixed Doubles Champion 2019
