Breanna Koenen

Breanna Koenen is an inaugural player and captain of the Brisbane Lions AFLW team.

Growing up on Magnetic Island, North Queensland, she never dreamed AFL would be a viable career option. As there was no established local female pathway, Bre played the majority of her junior football with the boys, before making the eight hour return journey each week to compete in the Cairns Women’s league once mixed football was no longer an option.

Bre was selected at pick 50 for the Brisbane Lions in the 2016 inaugural AFLW season draft. She has played in all four of their grand final appearances including the 2021 premiership side and has captained the Lions since Season 6. Bre’s continued growth and leadership was recognised in 2022, where she was named as Vice Captain of the Season 7 All Australian team after her first appearance in the representative squad.

Outside of football, Bre is passionate about her career in physiotherapy, having graduated from the University of Queensland with a Bachelor of Physiotherapy (Honours) in 2018.
